A community studio for researching
the social possibilities of immersive
audio for public performance.

The MIT Spatial Sound Lab is a community studio for researching the social possibilities of immersive audio for public performance. The Lab was founded by Prof. Ian Condry (CMSW, MIT) in November 2019 as a collaboration between d&b Audiotechnik, the department of Comparative Media Studies / Writing, and the MIT Office of the Arts.

Our lab has a 14.2 speaker system that runs the d&b Soundscape, an object-based mixing platform.

We organize workshops, listening sessions, sound events and ongoing research, experimentation and production.

Our research themes include: spatial sound for live performance and DJ; accessible technology, disability justice and multimodal sensory engagement; data sonification; interactive spatial design, spatial justice and more.

If you’re interested in learning more, please send us an email to receive periodic updates. The best way to get involved is to come to our events and introduce yourself. We hope to see you!
